Finding the most efficient HVAC systems is easy because ENERGY STAR publishes a “Most Efficient” list of air conditioners and source heat pumps every year. In order for an air conditioner to be placed on ENERGY STAR’s most efficient list, it must have at a SEER rating of 18 or greater and score at least a 13 Energy Efficiency Ratio (“ERR”) or greater.

For simplicity, below we’ve compiled a list of top rated air conditioners in 2022. Also, Larry Cook Heating & Cooling provides free quote consultations for air conditioners and furnaces. This is a great way to receive expert advice on the best air conditioners available for your particular needs.

XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner

Trane’s XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner is among the top rated air conditioners. When it comes to air conditioners and furnaces, Trane offers great products. Trane was coined America’s most trusted HVAC brand for seven consecutive years (2015 through 2021). Additionally, all Trane air conditioners have a 10 year limited warranty on outdoor coils and all other internal functional parts as applies to residential use.

The XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner is rated up to 22 SEER with 750 stages of comfort for ultimate climate control and electricity savings. For example, this air conditioner will operate at lower speeds for longer periods of time than your average air conditioner, which results in lower humidity levels, reduced sound, better temperature control, and lower cost to operate per minute. The XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner automatically adjusts the temperature to avoid temperature swings – all this with a quiet running fan. If you’re in the market for one of the most efficient HVAC systems, this is a great option. Many homes in Kansas have air conditioners with SEER ratings between 10 to 13. By investing in an energy efficient air conditioner, you are likely to experience decreased utility bills and increased comfort.

XV18 TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner

Another great air conditioner, that is also on ENERGY STAR’s 2022 Most Efficient list, is Trane’s XV18 TruComfort Variable Speed Air Conditioner. This air conditioner is very similar to the XV20i described above, but is rated 18 SEER. Trane’s XV18 unit operates quietly, and is variable speed automatically adjusting temperature while maintaining speeds to avoid temperature swings. This air conditioner has 700 stages to help eliminate temperature fluctuations, offering advanced temperature control, lower humidity levels, reduced sound during operation, enhanced filtration, and lower cost to operate per minute.  Trane’s air conditioners are tested in a Systems Extreme Environmental Test (“SEET”) lab to ensure that all of its systems can operate in extreme weather conditions.

In the 2022 air conditioner lineup on Energy Star’s most efficient list, you’ll find featured LG’s mini splits, specifically the “LG LAU/LAN Series” and “LG LSU/LSN Series.” LG has a large selection of duct-free products that heat and cool powerfully, all while maintaining high energy efficiency.

Ductless mini splits feature:

  • Room by Room Control. Duct free systems offer personalized comfort.  For each indoor unit, a remote allows for precise temperature control by zone to maximize energy usage by heating or cooling only the zones in use.
  • Optimized Airflow and Heat Technology. These systems operate at high speeds to quickly cool or heat a room, with customizable louvers and fan speed operation for temperature stratification and natural air circulation. Additionally, the units contain advanced LGRED heat technology to continuously heat down to -13°F.
  • Dehumidifying Mode. LG multi zone systems have sensors within the indoor unit to accurately measure room temperature and control humidity.
  • Defrost Control. LG multi zone systems have defrost controls that remove frost from outdoor coils when outdoor temperatures are low, all to prevent cold air from being blown into the indoor space being heated.
  • Automatic. LG multi zone systems automatically restart after power failure, and on sleep mode they automatically increase temperature settings 2°F twice in 30 minute increments.
  • Design Options. LG indoor units are offered in a variety of stylish designs, so that you don’t have to sacrifice room aesthetics for comfort.
  • Air Quality. Various LG duct-free indoor units have air quality filters to reduce dust, microscopic particles, and self-cleaning features to protect against mold growth.

Most importantly, the LG LAU/LAN Series boasts SEER ratings between 22-27.5 depending on which model you select.
